Safe Design of Cooled Tubular Reactors for Exothermic, Multiple Reactions. Consecutive Reactions

چکیده

The model of the pseudo-homogeneous, one-dimensional, cooled tubular reactor is applied to two consecutive, irreversible first order reactions. A criterion is derived to obtain a desired integral yield. Based on this criterion three requirements are formulated, which enable us to choose the relevant design and operating conditions. If any of the requirements are met, the reactor is also safe with respect to runaway. In an ihustration the results are applied to the production of phthalic anhydride via the oxidation of naphthalene. It is shown that the requirements formulated can be used for the design of the reactor and for its immediate adjustment to a change in operating conditions. In view of the special behaviour of consecutive reactions in a tubular reactor a fine tuning of the operating conditions remains necessary after this adjustment.

Global stabilization of exothermic chemical reactors under input constraints

Ah&act-This paper is devoted to the temperature control and the stabilization under input constraints of exothermic chemical reactors. We first consider a reactor in which a single and exothermic reaction takes place and design state feedback controllers to achieve the global and robust stabilization under input constraints of the reactor. Then, we extend these results to a general class of exo...

Design and Control of Gas-Phase Reactor/Recycle Processes with Reversible Exothermic Reactions

A gas-phase reactor with reversible exothermic reactions is the classical example of the many tradeoffs between operating costs and capital costs. Because per-pass conversion is limited by chemical equilibrium, recycle is almost always needed, and this gas recycle is expensive because of the high capital cost and high energy cost of gas compression. At low temperatures, conversion is limited by...

Safe Design and Operation of Tank Reactors for Multiple Reactions: Uniqueness and Multiplicity

A method is developed to design a tank reactor for unique operation and for two simultaneous or consecutive reactions of the first order. Dimensionless groups are introduced which are either exclusively representative for the properties of the reaction system or exclusively for the design and operating variables. In a plot of the dimensionless slopes of the heat withdrawal line versus the dimen...

Microstructured reactors for catalytic reactions

This review addresses the catalytic reactions performed in microstructured reactors, which are more and more recognized in recent years as a novel approach for chemistry and chemical process industry. They are particularly suited for highly exothermic and fast reactions allowing temperature control and isothermal operation. A brief evaluation of the advantages for gas-phase, liquid-phase, and g...

Fault tolerant model predictive control of exothermic reactions: Challenges and solution approaches

Model predictive control (MPC) is an attractive control scheme for embedding fault tolerance since, by being an optimal-control scheme solved online, it enables directly updating of the system model and constraints. Yet, there are several processes and systems where fault accommodation simply by updating the internal MPC model is infeasible. Of particular such interest is process plants with ex...
